Why Is The Final Fantasy XIII Cover Lame?

Today it was announced that the official cover for “Final Fantasy XIII” was released. But some aren’t big fans of it while others enjoy the simplicity.

Square Enix is well known for having fancy game covers for their Final Fantasy series but it seems this one they are either slacking off or being lazy. There appears to only be a single Character on the cover in a Rikku style pose (Final Fantasy X.. Not the slutty one from X-2) with a gunblade. Although with everything said and done…. it does appear to be a little better than some of the past titles. Taking into account that this is the main character of the game, and what little we do know about her, it seems vague at best. Though the Japanese cover looks far more interesting than the North American ones. This really isn’t a surprise since most Japanese people are very talented artists. With very talented artists comes kick ass covers.

Now I am not saying that the American cover designers aren’t talented. No, some of them are very good at creating covers but whoever made this one was trying to get a point across and really didn’t succeed. It would’ve been nice if there was something in the background other than just an empty space. Take a look at Final Fantasy VII cover for example. It shows the main character “Cloud” and the place called “Midgar” in the background. If they would have done the same for the cover of Final Fantasy XIII, then it would have been more appealing to the eyes. That is where it lost most of its points (Only way to state it using points, seems fair, not rating this cover), in the eye appeal department. Sure it looks nice that the main character is on there but the game has more to offer than just that one character.

Hopefully there will be a limited edition of Final Fantasy XIII that will look much better than this. When it comes to the limited edition covers, Square Enix does not disappoint its fans.
